Candidates File to Run in Local Ward, Police Council Elections

Candidates for local elected positions representing Chicago's McKinley Park neighborhood filed their petitions to participate in the 2023 Chicago Municipal General Election, slated for February 28.

In addition to those vying to become Chicago's mayor, filings included those for City Council representatives for the 11th and 12th wards, and community members representing the 9th District in the Chicago Police Department's new District Council program.

As publicly posted by the City of Chicago, the candidates who have filed to represent the 12th Ward in the Chicago City Council, and their local addresses, are:

11th Ward Candidates

As publicly shared by the City of Chicago, the candidates who have filed to represent the 11th Ward in the Chicago City Council, and their local addresses, are:

  • Nicole Lee (incumbent), 329 W. 24th Place

  • Anthony "Tony" Ciaravino, 4183 S. Emerald Ave.
  • Elvira "Vida" Jimenez, 3000 S. Throop St.

9th District Council, Chicago Police Department

The Chicago Police Department's new District Council program is among the latest changes to Chicago's community policing initiatives, giving three community members elected from each police district oversight into police operations and direct lines of communications into the department.

Appointment to City Council

The retirement of 12th Ward Alderman George Cardenas into a new elected position at the Cook County Board of Review means that Mayor Lori Lightfoot has until January 29, 2023, to name his replacement from the four people who applied to fill his seat:

  • Anabel Abarca
  • Robert Abeldano
  • Lydia Arroya
  • Anthony Wojtal

Petition Challenges

Candidates for ward elections must very often validate their submitted petitions to be on the ballot, as competitors regularly challenge each other to get petition signatures thrown out. Chicago's Board of Election Commissioners sets the minimum number of petitions required for each ward based on population.
